Jeep is telling more than a million Wrangler and Gladiator owners to park outside and away from buildings after 51 fires — some of which broke out while the vehicles were sitting off and unattended.

According to NHTSA’s own recall filing, manufacturer Stellantis (operating as FCA US) is recalling 1,076,999 model-year 2021-2025 Wranglers and Gladiators in the United States because a faulty electrical connection in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring can overheat nearby combustible material and ignite it. NHTSA’s filing specifically flags that the fire risk exists “even when the vehicles are turned off.”

Key Points

  • 1,076,999 U.S. vehicles recalled, plus more than 254,000 additional units in Canada, Mexico, and other markets, according to ABC News.
  • 51 fires and one injury have been tied to the defect so far.
  • The steering pump’s wiring connection can overheat and ignite combustible materials nearby — including while the Jeep is parked and powered off.
  • No permanent fix exists yet; owner notification letters were expected to start mailing July 9, 2026.

What’s Affected

  • 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler (all trims equipped with the electric hydraulic power steering pump)
  • 2021-2025 Jeep Gladiator
  • Owners can confirm their specific VIN is included by checking NHTSA’s recall lookup tool or Mopar’s own recall site.

FCA US “strongly urges vehicle owners to park their cars outside and away from other vehicles and buildings until their vehicle has been repaired,” the automaker said in the filing NHTSA published. That is a notably urgent instruction — automakers typically reserve “park outside” language for defects considered serious fire hazards, since it implies the risk isn’t limited to driving or startup.

What Owners Should Do

  • Park outside and away from structures and other vehicles immediately, even if you don’t plan to drive the Jeep.
  • Wait for a first-class mail notification from FCA US with repair scheduling instructions — do not assume a dealer visit is available yet.
  • Call FCA customer care at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 with questions or to confirm your VIN.
  • Once notified, dealers will repair or replace the wiring harness and/or the electric hydraulic power steering pump at no cost.

FCA has said it anticipates having a repair solution ready no later than July 2026, meaning some owners may be asked to simply wait and park defensively for a period before parts and labor are available. It’s a familiar, unwelcome position for owners of a vehicle built for driving off-pavement — being told the safest place for it, for now, is sitting still outdoors.
