In May 2026, Lotus itself effectively admitted the tension was real, announcing a strategic reversal away from its all-electric-only plan and back toward a lineup that keeps combustion and hybrid power alongside EVs.

The Reversal, in Lotus’s Own Words

Lotus didn’t quietly walk back its EV commitment — it held a press event to say so. Under the banner “Focus 2030,” the company confirmed a return to internal combustion and hybrid powertrains alongside its electric models, with CEO Qingfeng Feng stating plainly that “Lotus was born from the rebellious spirit of Colin Chapman, and that is not lost today,” and that the brand remains “obsessed with engineering, performance and building drivers’ cars,” according to Lotus Technology’s own investor announcement. Scaling back from a projected 150,000 annual sales target to a steadier 30,000-unit goal, as outlined in the same strategy announcement, tells its own story about how the original all-electric bet performed against reality. A company doesn’t cut its own volume ambitions by 80 percent and bring back a combustion supercar because the EV transition was going better than planned. The more plausible read is that Lotus’s leadership recognized what its own spec sheets already showed: heavy electric vehicles can be quick in a straight line and quiet at a stoplight, but they don’t automatically inherit the cornering feel that built the brand’s reputation in the first place, and chasing EV sales volume was starting to cost Lotus the very identity that made people want a Lotus rather than a generic electric crossover.
