A driver came out of a wreck that left his sedan wedged sideways above an Interstate 20 entrance ramp with barely a scratch, and footage of his legs dangling from the overpass has spread across social media since the crash happened overnight on September 9 in downtown Atlanta. WSB-TV reports the car became lodged between concrete beams of the overpass near the I-20/I-75-85 interchange after the driver lost control, struck the median and flipped over the rail onto the bridge structure below.

A precarious landing

Atlanta Fire Rescue described the vehicle as sitting in a “precarious position,” suspended above the entrance ramp and supported only by the concrete beams underneath it, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The driver climbed out of the wrecked sedan on his own, without needing extraction equipment, before Grady EMS evaluated him at the scene and took him to a hospital. Atlanta Police confirmed no one involved suffered critical injuries.

Bystanders capture the moment

Two people leaving a nearby club noticed debris and a gathering crowd and turned their cameras upward. “At first we just saw a lot of traffic … We look up, we see feet,” witness Kalena Boykin told FOX 5 Atlanta. Another bystander, Michael Cunningham Jr., said he “could see a bunch of people were looking up and pointing” before realizing a driver was trapped above the roadway.

  • Driver freed himself without help from fire crews or extraction tools

Cause still under investigation

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the driver to lose control or exactly how the car ended up wedged in that position, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. The clips have circulated widely online since, with several viewers comparing the dangling-legs image to the melting Wicked Witch scene from “The Wizard of Oz.” WSB-TV confirmed the video is authentic and that the driver stayed alert and talked with people below before crews reached him.

Atlanta police have not released the driver’s identity or said whether any citations will follow once the investigation wraps up.

A dangerous stretch of interstate

The I-20/I-75-85 interchange sits in one of downtown Atlanta’s busiest merge points, where entrance and exit ramps stack tightly against elevated concrete structures. A vehicle leaving the roadway at that spot has little room for error before hitting either a barrier wall or the overpass supports themselves, which is likely what kept the sedan pinned in place rather than falling to the ramp below. Emergency crews closed lanes near the interchange while they assessed the structure and cleared the wreckage, though officials have not said how long traffic was affected.
