A federal settlement worth more than $149 million is now paying out cash to owners and lessees of certain Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen vehicles equipped with defective ZF TRW airbag control units. The filing window is open, some deadlines fall in May 2026, and drivers who take a few minutes to check their VIN could collect anywhere from $250 to $1,000 depending on the brand and claim type. Here is what the settlement covers, who qualifies and how to file before time runs out.

What went wrong with ZF TRW airbag control units

The airbag control unit (ACU) is the electronic module that decides whether to fire your airbags in a crash. ZF TRW, a major auto-parts supplier, manufactured ACUs installed in millions of vehicles across several brands. According to court filings in In Re: ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation, a circuit-board defect can cause the ACU to fail during a collision, potentially preventing airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from deploying at all. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has linked the flaw to multiple recalls and investigations.

Rather than continue years of litigation, the automakers and ZF TRW reached a series of coordinated settlements. The combined value exceeds $149.1 million, according to case documents referenced on the official ACU settlement website. Each brand has its own sub-settlement with distinct deadlines, payout amounts and claim forms, so owners need to look up their specific vehicle.

Mitsubishi: up to $1,000 per vehicle

Mitsubishi’s portion of the settlement is valued at roughly $8.5 million and covers select cars and SUVs, including certain model years of the Outlander, Outlander Sport and Lancer. Eligible owners and lessees can receive a base cash payment of up to $250 without proof of purchase, according to a Top Class Actions summary of the case. Drivers who can document out-of-pocket costs tied to the defect, such as repair bills, rental cars or diminished resale value, may claim up to $1,000 per vehicle through the official Mitsubishi claim portal.

Two deadlines apply. Online and mailed claim forms must be submitted or postmarked by May 23, 2026. A separate exclusion deadline of May 8, 2026 applies to owners who want to opt out and preserve the right to sue independently. Drivers who do nothing will release their claims and receive no payment. Full instructions and the claim form are available at acusettlement.com/mitsubishi.

Hyundai and Kia: cash payments up to $350

A parallel settlement covers certain Hyundai models and the 2011-2012 and 2014 Kia Sedona, according to the Hyundai/Kia settlement FAQ. Eligible current and former owners and lessees can receive cash payments of up to $350, plus extended warranty coverage on the ACU and related components.

A court-authorized notice distributed via PR Newswire confirmed that the settlement also provides reimbursement for certain past repair expenses. The court has not ruled on the merits of the case; both sides agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of a trial. Owners who wish to object may do so before the final approval hearing, and those who want to file a claim should monitor the settlement website for updated forms and deadlines.

Volkswagen: a separate Takata-related settlement

Volkswagen owners dealing with airbag issues may encounter a different but overlapping legal track. The Volkswagen sub-settlement falls under In Re: Takata Airbag Products Liability Litigation, a massive multidistrict case focused on defective Takata inflators rather than ZF TRW control units. The two defect families are distinct: Takata inflators can rupture and spray metal fragments, while ZF TRW ACUs can silently fail to trigger deployment.

The Volkswagen Takata settlement site explains that eligible owners may seek reimbursement for economic losses connected to recall-affected vehicles, such as costs incurred while waiting for parts or loss of use. The settlement does not cover personal-injury or property-damage claims beyond the vehicle itself. Owners should check their VIN on the site to confirm eligibility and review the specific filing deadlines, which vary by claim category.

How to check your eligibility and file

Regardless of brand, the process follows the same basic steps:

  1. Look up your VIN. Enter it at acusettlement.com (for ZF TRW claims) or autoairbagsettlement.com (for Volkswagen/Takata claims) to confirm your vehicle is covered.
  2. Gather documentation. Proof of purchase is not always required, but having your registration, title or purchase agreement can increase your payout, especially for Mitsubishi claims above the base amount.
  3. Submit your claim online or by mail. Each brand portal has its own form. Double-check the deadline that applies to your vehicle.
  4. Watch for updates. Final approval hearings are still pending for some sub-settlements. Bookmark the relevant site and check back for payment timelines.
