The camera is behind a wall of backs on pit road at Bristol Motor Speedway, with the night’s grandstands lit up behind the scrum. In the first two seconds a man in blue lunges into a cluster beside a yellow race car, and arms start flying. By the five second mark the person filming is being shoved along by the crowd, and phones are held high on every side.

NASCAR posted the 12 second clip on September 19, 2026, from its own account, @nascar, tagged at Bristol Motor Speedway, with a five word caption: “A wild scene on pit road.” It shows the fight between Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar after the Bass Pro Shops Night Race from the level of the people standing in it.

At about eight seconds a crew member in a blue Wabash shirt, the colors of Blaney’s team, pushes into the middle, and a man in a black and yellow Zeigler shirt, the colors on Hocevar’s No. 77, is caught up in the same knot. In the final second the clip is still a tangle of blue and black shirts with hands reaching over heads. The clip cuts off with the crowd still packed in around them.

Hocevar’s Side of It

The footage is too crowded to show who threw what, but NASCAR’s written account fills that in. Its report from the race says Blaney charged at Hocevar and pushed him, and Hocevar punched Blaney in the face before officials and team members moved Blaney away. Neither driver appeared to be injured, according to the same report.

The same NASCAR report quotes Hocevar speaking to reporters after the race: “I saw him coming, and he’s moving pretty fast, and then he grabbed me.” It also quotes him saying, “That was the first time I ever hit anybody,” and, “I understand why he’s upset. That’s probably his championship.”

The fight started with a crash. NASCAR’s race recap says Blaney was knocked into the wall on Lap 458, after leading a race high 202 laps. The NASCAR report says Hocevar finished third and Joey Logano won.

What the Comments Got Right and Wrong

One commenter predicted NASCAR would fine both drivers “like $50K.” That did not happen. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell said two days later that there would be “nothing in terms of post race penalties,” according to NASCAR’s report on the decision. NASCAR first said it was reviewing whether any crew members should be penalized, then announced that no penalties at all would come from the Bristol weekend.

If Someone Comes at You After Contact on the Road

Hocevar’s description, a driver “moving pretty fast” toward him who then grabbed him, is the moment an everyday driver should plan for before it happens. On the street there are no officials to step in.

If an angry driver follows you after a scrape or a near miss, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s guidance on dealing with aggressive drivers is direct: “Call the police if you believe a driver is following you or harassing you.” Do it from inside the car with the doors locked, and give the dispatcher your location and the other car’s description and plate.

Do not step out to meet someone who is already charging at you. Staying in a locked car with the police on the phone takes that choice away from both of you.
