A 2025 Ford Bronco wearing the factory 35-inch tire package clears a 43.2-degree approach angle. A base Bronco without that package, sitting on the same wheelbase and looking nearly identical in a dealer lot photo, clears just 35.5 degrees. That’s an eight-degree gap between two trucks wearing the same nameplate, and on a rutted trail approach it’s the difference between the front bumper skimming over a ledge and the front bumper getting ground into scrap. Automakers publish these numbers themselves, trim by trim, in technical spec sheets most buyers never open. Once you line them up side by side, the marketing photos of trail-ready SUVs start to look a lot less uniform.

What Approach, Breakover, and Departure Angles Actually Measure

Approach angle is the steepest incline a vehicle’s front end can climb without the bumper or front fascia hitting the ground first. Departure angle is the same measurement at the rear. Breakover angle (sometimes called ramp angle) measures how sharp a ridge the vehicle can crest without high-centering its undercarriage on the peak. All three numbers depend on wheelbase, tire diameter, bumper design, and ride height, which is why swapping to a package with bigger tires and shorter overhangs can move the number by five to ten degrees on the same platform. None of this shows up in a curb-weight-and-horsepower spec box, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed until a buyer is staring at a rock ledge their trim can’t actually clear.

The Bronco’s Own Spec Sheet Shows a Nearly 12-Degree Swing

Ford’s own 2025 Bronco technical specifications lay out four distinct geometry tiers on one nameplate. Base two-door and four-door models post 35.5-degree approach, roughly 29.6-degree departure, and 20-21-degree breakover angles, with 8.3 to 8.4 inches of ground clearance. Step up to Big Bend trim and departure improves to 32.0 degrees with a bump to 9.4 inches of clearance. Any trim ordered with the 35-inch tire package jumps to 43.2 degrees approach, 37.0-37.2 departure, and 26.3-29.0 breakover, riding 11.5 to 11.6 inches off the ground. The Raptor sits above all of them at 47.2 degrees approach, 40.5 departure, 30.8 breakover, and 13.1 inches of clearance. Four trims, one badge, and a spread wide enough that the least capable Bronco would scrape its nose on terrain the most capable one drives over without slowing down.

Wrangler Rubicon’s Numbers Are the Benchmark, Not the Average Jeep

Jeep’s own Wrangler press kit puts the Rubicon at 47.4 degrees approach, 40.4 degrees departure, and 27.8 degrees breakover, with 12.9 inches of ground clearance thanks to a Dana 44 HD full-float rear axle that lets owners upsize tires without losing that geometry. Those figures are genuinely class-leading, and they’re the numbers most buyers picture when they hear the word Wrangler. But Rubicon is the top trim, not the volume seller. A Wrangler Sport or Sahara riding on smaller tires and a different bumper doesn’t inherit the Rubicon’s geometry just because it wears the same seven-slot grille. The badge on the tailgate tells you almost nothing about which of those angle figures you’re actually driving.

The 4Runner Redesign Closed the Gap, But Didn’t Close It Completely

Toyota’s sixth-generation 4Runner needed the update. Coverage of the redesign’s reveal reported that Toyota improved approach and departure angles to 32 and 24 degrees respectively across the lineup, with the new Trailhunter trim adding roughly two extra inches of ground clearance on top of that baseline. That’s a real gain over the outgoing generation, and it matters for a nameplate built on off-road credibility. But run the comparison next to the other two trucks here and the 4Runner’s improved numbers still land well behind a 35-inch-tire Bronco and nowhere near Rubicon or Raptor territory. A model can get meaningfully better in a redesign and still trail the field, and the 4Runner’s 2025 refresh is a clean example of both things being true at once.

Reading the Sticker Instead of the Marketing Photo

None of these numbers are secret. Ford, Jeep, and Toyota all publish them in owner-facing spec sheets and press materials, trim by trim. The problem is that off-road marketing photography rarely bothers to specify which trim is climbing the rock ledge in the ad, and dealer lots don’t post approach angles next to the price tag the way they post horsepower. The spread inside a single nameplate can be as wide as the spread between competing brands, which means the badge on the hood is a worse predictor of trail capability than the build sheet taped inside the glovebox. Buyers cross-shopping these three trucks are really cross-shopping a dozen distinct vehicles wearing three names.
