Any modern rotary sports car needs an answer to that problem before regulators let it near a showroom floor.

How the Patent Says It Would Work

The filing describes splitting the rotary housing’s exhaust pathways between the side port and the peripheral port. The higher-volume, hotter side-port exhaust would feed a turbocharger. The cooler peripheral-port exhaust would route through an internal passage to an EGR cooler that uses the engine’s own coolant, avoiding the plumbing a typical EGR retrofit needs. Under heavy load, when EGR isn’t needed, that cooled exhaust gets redirected to a secondary catalytic converter instead.

It’s a compact, clever piece of packaging on paper, exactly the kind of trick a rotary needs given how little room exists inside the housing to begin with.

Reading the Tea Leaves Correctly

Mazda has filed rotary-related patents for years, some tied to concepts like the Iconic SP and Vision X-Coupe, without any of them turning into a production sports car. A patent application protects an idea; it does not confirm a car is coming. This filing is worth watching because it targets the specific obstacle, emissions compliance, that has kept a rotary sports car off Mazda’s lineup for over a decade. Whether that translates into an actual RX successor is a separate question, and Mazda has given no indication of when, or if, it plans to answer it.
