“Girl just bought her first car, very exciting.” That is how @cc.campbell opens a 30 second video filmed selfie style in a sunny parking lot. She is wearing a blue Buffalo Bills T-shirt and round glasses, there is a building with bright green trim behind her, and the one thing that never appears anywhere in the clip is the car.

What does appear is the key. Two seconds in she lifts her key ring up next to her face, and hanging from it is a tiny red and white sneaker. “Got a little sneaker on the keychain there,” she says. Then she lays out the plan: “But before we do a full car reveal, I’m gonna try to do the auto start to start it. See if you guys can guess what we got just by how it sounds.”

She is not sure it will go to plan. “We’ll see if we can get this to work,” she says, and at about the 11 second mark her hand comes up into the frame with the fob. For the next 15 seconds she does not say a word. The camera stays on her face the whole time. She looks down, looks off to one side, presses her lips together and grins at the lens while the car stays out of frame.

She comes back at 27 seconds with her review: “She absolutely purrs, baby.” That is the end of the clip. No badge, no paint color, no body style. The caption keeps the game going: “A different kind of car reveal! What do you think it is.”

The video works because of what Campbell leaves out. A first car is a big moment, and the usual way to share it is a photo in front of the hood. She gives her followers three clues instead: a key ring, a remote start and the sound of the engine. The full reveal she mentions is saved for later.

For anyone who has just picked up a first car of their own, the clip points at a few things worth knowing.

The first is the feature she is using. What she calls auto start is remote start, which lets the engine fire from the key fob while the driver is still outside the car. Her “we’ll see if we can get this to work” is the right attitude on day one, because the button sequence is different from one make to another. On many cars it is a press of the lock button followed by holding the remote start button for a few seconds. The owner’s manual spells out the exact steps, and it is worth five minutes to read that page before standing in a parking lot and guessing.

It also helps to know what happens after the engine starts. On most factory systems the doors stay locked, the car will not shift out of park until the key is inside, and the engine shuts itself off after a set number of minutes if nobody gets in. None of that is a fault. It is the system doing its job.

One rule applies to every remote start, on every car: never use it when the car is parked in a closed garage. The engine is running with nobody near it, and exhaust builds up fast in a closed space. Outdoors in an open lot, the way she does it here, is where the feature belongs.

The sneaker has a practical side too. A charm that stands out makes a set of keys easy to find in a bag and easy to tell apart from everyone else’s. Keep it small, though. On cars that start with a key in the ignition, a heavy, crowded key ring hangs off the switch for every mile driven, and that weight can wear the switch over time. One light charm is plenty.

Campbell’s way of sharing the news is also a smart one to copy. Nothing in her video shows a license plate, a window sticker or a single page of paperwork. People who post a new car often put all three on camera without thinking about it. Sound and a keychain give away nothing about where the owner lives or what was paid.

As for the game itself, an engine starting and settling into idle does not tell a listener much. It can separate the clatter of a diesel from a gasoline engine, and it can hint at a small engine or a large one. Picking a make and model from a few seconds of sound is a much taller order, which is what makes it a good question to ask. She knows the answer, and her verdict is in: it purrs.
