Two silver McLarens sit nose to tail in the Hungaroring pit lane. The front car, carrying the number 1, has its crew gathered around it, but it does not move. The car behind, with Lewis Hamilton in the cockpit, waits. A timing graphic in the corner reads “Fastest Sector Times, Q3,” with Hamilton’s name against the first two sectors and Fernando Alonso’s against the third.

That pit lane footage is the centre of a 61 second reel posted on September 22, 2026 by the motorsport page @race.sector. The page did not film any of it. It is a cut of old broadcast footage, its caption ends with “DM for credit,” and the text it laid over the top reads “Lewis looking Alonso dead in the eye as Fernando lies too,” followed by two eye emojis. No original creator is credited, so this article credits the page that shared it.

The reel opens in a press conference room in front of a “Formula 1 Magyar Nagydíj” backdrop, Hamilton and Alonso side by side in red McLaren caps. Subtitles run along the bottom; the clearest fragments that can be read are “holding you back” and “holding me back.” Then it cuts to the pit stop, shown from several angles: a crew member standing in front of Alonso’s car, Hamilton’s car pulled up right behind it, mechanics in white waiting beside both. Finally Alonso pulls away.

After that the reel moves to a man in a white Vodafone McLaren shirt walking briskly down the pit lane and talking at the pit wall, then to Alonso in a Vodafone cap answering questions in front of a crowd, and ends with him walking through the paddock surrounded by photographers. The subtitles over those last interview shots were too small to read in full, so they are not quoted here.

The caption lays out the page’s version. “In 2007, McLaren had two drivers fighting at the front of the grid: reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso and rookie Lewis Hamilton,” it reads. The relationship “reached its peak at the Hungarian GP, where a qualifying incident between the two drivers and McLaren’s subsequent penalty created major tension.” It adds that the Spygate controversy later “resulted in McLaren being excluded from the Constructors’ Championship.”

What the Official Record Says

Formula 1’s own account backs up the core of it. In a piece on the pairing, the sport says Alonso blocked Hamilton in the pit lane during a double stacked stop at the Hungaroring, which stopped Hamilton from completing a final Q3 run, and that the relationship between the two “deteriorated rapidly” as the season went on. It calls Spygate a “bombshell” that cost McLaren any hope of the constructors’ title. Both drivers finished on 109 points, one behind champion Kimi Räikkönen, and Alonso left at the end of the year, one season into a three year contract.

The same piece quotes the team’s test driver at the time, Pedro de la Rosa, calling the line up “possibly the strongest there’s ever been. Ever.” He also said “there was nothing wrong ever done at the racetrack between them.”

Hamilton’s half of that tie was a rookie season Formula 1 ranks among the best ever. According to the sport’s list of top debut seasons, he finished on the podium in his first Grand Prix and in the eight races after it, a record run of consecutive top three finishes for a debut season. He took 12 podiums and four wins, the first in Canada in his sixth race, matching Jacques Villeneuve’s 1996 mark for wins by a rookie.

How to Read the Timing Graphic in the Clip

The Q3 box that stays on screen through the pit stop is the most useful thing in the reel for understanding why the wait mattered:

  • Each of the three lines shows who has set the fastest time in that part of the lap so far in the session. Here Hamilton held two of the three.
  • The bottom line, “Combined Lap Time,” adds the best sectors together into a lap nobody has actually driven yet. It shows how much time was still on the table.
  • To check the outcome of any session yourself, use the results archive on Formula 1’s official site rather than a clip’s caption.
