“Hey, you got a spare?” is the first thing he says to her. The red two door car is stopped on the shoulder of a multilane road with traffic passing in the next lane, and he explains how he came to be there: “I see you got a flat. I was behind you and I seen it. And I seen you pull over, so I followed you.”

The video is from @theroadsidetech, with the on screen title “Right Place Right Time.” His caption reads, “Just happened to be in the Right Spot at the Right Time.” It is filmed from his point of view, so his gloved hands and tools appear in the shots.

He makes the offer plainly. “If you got a spare, I’ll put it on for you real quick,” he says, and then, “Want me to help you out?” She thanks him. Trucks and cars keep passing a lane away. The trunk floor comes up and a compact spare with a yellow label is sitting in the well underneath.

The damaged wheel is an alloy with the tire collapsed around the rim. He works on it with a powered wrench, a jack goes under the car, and the spare goes on. The spare needs one more thing. “I noticed your spare was flat. Let me put some air in it,” he says, and the next shot shows an air hose clipped to the spare’s valve while the wheel is on the car.

Partway through she asks whether this is his line of work. “I do roadside assistance,” he answers. Her next question: “And how much I have to give you?” His reply: “You don’t have to give me nothing. I’m doing it for free out of kindness.”

His next line is about packing her car back up: “Let me put that back in here for you. It’s not going to fit under there.”

Near the end he starts to tell her why he stopped, “Whenever I was behind you,” and breaks off to turn something down: “No, no, no, it’s okay, it’s okay.” Then he finishes the thought. “I seen your tire kind of like smoking when you was driving. That’s why I pulled up.” A moment later he gives in: “You’re gonna make me feel bad. Okay, I’ll take it.” His last line to her is “You have a great day.” The video does not show what she gave him.

What This Stop Shows Any Driver With a Spare in the Trunk

Check the air in your spare before you need it. Hers was flat, and the swap only worked because the person who stopped had a way to inflate it. Add the spare to the same routine as the four tires on the ground, and keep a small inflator in the car.

Learn how your own trunk floor and spare well open, and where the jack and wrench are stored. In the video the question “How do you open it?” gets asked on the shoulder, with traffic going past. Do that once in your driveway instead.

Pull over when something looks or smells wrong at a wheel. He says the tire was smoking while she was still driving on it, and she was already stopping when he followed.

Keep to the side of the car away from the traffic lane while the work is done. The footage shows vehicles passing one lane over.

When a stranger stops to help, ask what she asked. She found out who he was (“You work on this?”) and what it would cost (“How much I have to give you?”) while the job was under way. He, for his part, said what he had seen and asked “Want me to help you out?”
