Flash flood alerts and strong winds forced the organizers of Luftgekühlt 12 to change the start time of their Porsche gathering near Atlanta. Even so, about 8,000 people and more than 300 air-cooled Porsches showed up.

Organizers Moved The Start Within 24 Hours

A state of emergency was in effect, with flash flood alerts and strong winds. Organizers changed the start time within 24 hours so the show could run under clear skies.

Founder Patrick Long said, “the safety of our guests, partners and staff is always paramount.”

Fans Came From 23 Countries And 45 States

Organizers reported attendees from 23 countries and 45 U.S. states. The venue is near Porsche Cars North America’s headquarters.

Long called Atlanta an ideal location for the global community of owners and fans.

Three Yellow 935s Together For The First Time

For the 50th anniversary of the 935’s 1976 debut, three yellow Porsche 935s owned and raced by Don and Bill Whittington were displayed together for the first time since their racing era. The display linked Porsche’s competition history to Road Atlanta.

It was one of three main feature exhibits at the event.

The Targa Florio Turns 120

A second exhibit marked 120 years of the Targa Florio. Four historic Porsches were shown, including a 1959 718 RSK that led much of the 1959 race and set the fastest lap, only to suffer a suspension failure on the final lap.

The group also included an RS 60, which won overall in 1960, a 904 Carrera GTS that won in 1964 and a 1971 908/3 built for the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring. The exhibit covered the race’s influence on the 911 Targa.

Steve McQueen’s Le Mans Connection

A Gulf-liveried 1970 Porsche 917K was shown at Trilith Live by the Brumos Collection. It was previously owned by Jo Siffert and leased to Steve McQueen for his 1971 film Le Mans.

Fans packed around it for photos.

How Cars Get Picked

Owners apply by submitting a car’s history, a description and photos for review. Selected cars include preserved originals, daily drivers, race cars and custom builds.

Creative director Jeff Zwart says each event builds on the last and that the team wants to tell new stories.

Movies, Hosts And Partners

Tommy Kendall, a Hall of Fame driver and broadcaster, hosted. His record includes four Trans-Am wins, two Le Mans starts and the title of youngest IMSA champion.

The event also held the first public activation of Luft Cinema, which screened a Mobil 1 feature film about Zwart racing an air-cooled 911 in the East African Safari Rally. More than 16 partner brands ran on-site activations.

What’s Next

Luftgekühlt 13 is set for October 2, 2027. The sister brand Air|Water, for air- and water-cooled Porsches, holds an exhibitor hall trade show in Costa Mesa, California, on April 24, 2027.

The Southern Debut Brought A New Crowd

Luftgekühlt events have drawn big crowds in other parts of the country, and Atlanta was a first for the series. The location gave fans in the Southeast a chance to see rare cars without a cross-country trip.

Seeing 300 air-cooled Porsches in one place is the kind of thing owners remember for years. The sounds, the colors and the shapes of the cars fill the whole venue.

It also puts the focus on the people. Owners, friends, kids and grandparents walk the rows together, and everyone has a story about a favorite car.

What “Air Cooled” Means For Owners

Air-cooled Porsches use fans and fins to cool the engine instead of a radiator and coolant. That design ended on the 911 in the late 1990s, which is why enthusiasts treasure the older cars.

Because they rely on airflow and oil to stay cool, these engines need proper care. Regular oil changes with the correct oil, clean cooling fins and a healthy cooling fan are essential.

Check for oil leaks, which are common on older engines. A small seep can grow, and low oil in an air-cooled engine can be costly.

Tips For Visiting A Big Car Show

Check the weather and the organizers’ updates before you leave. As this event showed, schedules can change quickly when storms roll in.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, sunscreen and a hat. Big shows involve a lot of walking and standing.

Respect the cars. Do not touch them without permission, keep a safe distance with bags and strollers, and ask owners before taking close-up photos of interiors.

Talk to the owners. Most are happy to share the story of their cars, and you may learn something about maintenance, history or the best local mechanic.

Arrive early or late to avoid peak crowds, and plan your parking in advance.
